Abstract of Project:

The purpose of this project is to provide a collaborative learning opportunity where discipline-based faculty members can work together with subject specialist librarians to incorporate information competence into class and coursework. Participants will learn what information competence is, how information competence can be integrated into undergraduate courses, what resources and support the library and the campus can provide, and how student acquisition of information competence skills can be assessed. The new hands-on gis lab/ electronic teaching classroom in the University Library is a perfect setting for the workshop.

Project Description:

The goal of this project is for discipline-based faculty members to revise one of their existing courses to incorporate information competence principles and learning outcomes, and for discipline-based faculty members to work with subject specialist librarians to develop learning tools in the disciplines which can be used in departments and schools throughout the university.

Library staff and experienced faculty "coaches" will demonstrate the CSU Information Competence teaching modules which participants may use as models for their own courses.

Participants will receive a packet of materials upon which discussion will be based, they will attend presentations, and they will have plenty of supervised workshop time to redesign their courses and create learning tools in a supportive teaching-learning environment.

Workshop presentations will be organized around the seven competencies defined by the CLRIT Work Group on Information Competence. Participants will learn what these competencies are, how they may be best acquired, the type of assignments which best demonstrate student mastery of these skills, and how these competencies may be integrated seamlessly and effectively into diverse course materials.

At the end of the workshop, faculty participants will present and share their completed projects with others in the group, and then serve as mentors to their departmental and school colleagues. During the 1999-2000 academic year, participants will facilitate an information competency workshop for their colleagues through the Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching.

Deliverables:

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to

1. Demonstrate how information competence principles are important to include in course goals, objectives, activities, assignments, and instructional strategies.

2. Share with others how they have created discipline-specific learning tools, such as web modules, to expand and enhance course assignments and activities.

3. Produce a revised model course syllabi and assignments which include information competence principles and teaching-learning tools.

4. Participants also agree to facilitate an information competency workshop through the Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching.

Project Time Line

January-March 1999

1. Develop promotional materials, produce the application forms and selection criteria; inform the campus community about the workshop opportunity.

2. Develop the curriculum for the workshop, based upon previous models developed by the Project Directors while at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

3. Secure workshop speakers (e.g. Librarians, Distinguished Teachers, Director of Academic Computing)

4. Receive and screen applications.

5. Select and notify workshop participants.

April-June 1999

1. Order monographic publications; secure copyright permission for the duplication of periodical articles.

2 Create and provide notebook of materials for workshop participants.

July 1999

1. Offer workshop to transfer knowledge about information competence to workshop participants.

2. Use multiple methods for assessing the workshop benefits and outcomes ( paper evaluation instruments, interviews with participants, observation).

3. Discuss strategies for continuing the campus momentum for integrating information competence throughout, and across, the curriculum; between and within programs on the main campus in Hayward and the branch campus in Contra Costa County.

4. Share outcomes with colleagues.
